C’est quoi la profondeur de champ ?
Dans le billet précédent, on a parlé en détail de ce qu’est l’ouverture en photo. C’est souvent le premier réglage auquel on pense quand on veut plus de flou dans une image. Pourtant, le choix de l’ouverture n’est pas, et de loin, le critère principal quand on veut diminuer la profondeur de champ. Et c’est ce qu’on va voir dans cet article.
1. La profondeur de champ : définition
C’est quoi exactement la profondeur de champ ? C’est la zone de netteté de l’image, à l’avant et à l’arrière de l’endroit où est faite la mise au point.
- Avec une petite profondeur de champ, seule une petite zone autour du sujet sera nette : le premier plan et l’arrière-plan seront flous. La zone de netteté dépend bien sûr de l’endroit où on fait la mise au point. Si on prend l’exemple ci-dessous, on peut faire la mise au point sur le premier massif de fleurs : dans ce cas, les deux autres massifs et l’arbre en arrière-plan seront flous. Si on fait la mise au point sur l’arbre, les massifs de fleurs en premier plan seront alors flous.
- Plus la profondeur de champ augmente, plus la taille de la zone de netteté augmente.
- Avec une profondeur de champ maximale, l’ensemble de la scène sera nette.
Comment faire pour avoir une petite (ou une grande) profondeur de champ ? Quels réglages utiliser ? On voit voir dans la suite quels sont les paramètres qui influencent la profondeur de champ et comment les utiliser.
2. Profondeur de champ et ouverture
Le premier réglage auquel on pense quand on veut modifier la profondeur de champ, c’est l’ouverture. J’ai consacré un article complet à ce réglage, disponible ici.
Pour rappel, l’ouverture correspond à l’ouverture du diaphragme de l’objectif. On note ce réglage sous la forme d’une fraction f/N : la focale f divisée par le nombre d’ouverture N. Ce nombre varie généralement de 1.2 à 22 en fonction de l’objectif utilisé (mais il existe aussi des objectifs à très grande ouverture).
Plus on ouvre le diaphragme, plus la profondeur de champ est petite. Ce qui veut dire que si on veut une petite profondeur de champ (beaucoup de flou dans l’image), il faudra choisir une petite valeur d’ouverture (par exemple f/2).
Les photos ci-dessous montrent comment le choix de l’ouverture influence la profondeur de champ. Sur la première photo, l’ouverture a été fixée à f/4.1 : seule la partie avant de la règle est nette. Sur la seconde photo, j’ai choisi une ouverture plus petite (f/14), la règle est presque entièrement nette.
3. Profondeur de champ et focale
La profondeur de champ dépend aussi de la focale utilisée. Plus la focale est longue, plus la profondeur de champ est petite. Pour faire simple, il est beaucoup plus facile d’obtenir un arrière-plan flou avec un téléobjectif alors que ce sera plus compliqué avec un objectif grand-angle.
Les photos ci-dessous illustrent la différence de profondeur de champ avec une focale courte (ici un objectif 50 mm) et une focale longue (un zoom, ici 200 mm). Pour les deux photos, la distance entre la boite, le meuble en arrière-plan et l’appareil photo sont les mêmes ; seule la focale change.
4. Profondeur de champ et distances
La profondeur de champ dépend aussi des distances : la distance au sujet photographié mais aussi la distance entre le sujet et les différents plans de l’image. Par exemple, si on veut avoir un arrière-plan flou, il faut se placer de façon à ce que l’arrière-plan soit le plus éloigné possible du sujet.
La distance entre l’appareil photo et le sujet est un élément essentiel : plus on est près du sujet, plus la profondeur de champ est petite. C’est ce qu’illustrent les trois photos ci-dessous. Pour la première, l’appareil photo est situé à environ un mètre de la scène : la boite, la chaise et le meuble sont nets. Pour la seconde photo, j’ai rapproché l’appareil photo : l’angle de vue est donc réduit (on ne voit plus la chaise) mais, surtout, le meuble en arrière-plan est flou. Enfin, sur la troisième photo, j’ai éloigné la boite du meuble : l’arrière-plan est donc plus flou.
L’angle de vue a également un rôle important car il influence la distance des différents éléments par rapport à l’appareil photo. Sur la première photo ci-dessous, on a choisi une vue de dessus : la règle est presque entièrement nette. Sur la seconde photo, l’angle de vue est rasant, ce qui a pour conséquence d’éloigner les extrémités de la règle de l’appareil photo : seule une petite partie de la règle est nette.
5. Profondeur de champ et matériel
Enfin, la profondeur de champ dépend aussi du boitier lui-même et plus précisément de la taille du capteur de l’appareil photo. En effet, plus le capteur est grand, plus on peut obtenir une petite profondeur de champ. On parle bien ici de la taille physique du capteur et non pas du nombre de pixels qu’il contient.
C’est pour cela qu’il est facile d’obtenir un bel arrière-plan flou avec un reflex plein format. La première photo ci-dessous illustre le flou progressif que l’on peut obtenir avec un boitier de type reflex ou hybride. Cet effet de flou progressif est impossible à obtenir avec un smartphone, même parmi les plus perfectionnés (tout au moins pour le moment). Je reparlerai plus en détail du cas des smartphones dans un prochain article.
Les smartphones, avec leurs capteurs plus petits, ont une très grande profondeur de champ : toute la photo sera nette (sauf si on photographie un sujet en très gros plan). Le smartphone est donc très pratique quand on recherche une netteté parfaite, quelle que soit la distance du sujet. La second photo, ci-dessous, a été prise au smartphone. Avec cette corolle très creuse, j’avais du mal à avoir à la fois le pistil et les pétales entièrement nets. Dans ce cas, utiliser mon smartphone m’a permis de contourner le problème et d’obtenir le résultat souhaité.
6. Profondeur de champ : quel réglage choisir ?
Le schéma ci-dessous reprend les principaux paramètres qui entrent en jeu. Il y en a beaucoup, et le résultat final dépendra de la façon dont on associe ces différents paramètres.
Par exemple, on peut avoir un arrière-plan flou avec un objectif grand-angle, mais il faudra alors choisir une très grande ouverture et un arrière-plan éloigné. Au contraire, si on utilise un zoom, une ouverture autour de f/5 suffira et l’arrière-plan n’aura pas besoin d’être très éloigné.
On l’a vu, le résultat dépend aussi du matériel utilisé, de la taille du capteur en particulier. Je te conseille donc de faire un maximum de tests avec ton propre matériel. Tu peux par exemple :
- tester différentes valeurs de l’ouverture, pour voir l’effet produit sur la profondeur de champ (pense à bien éloigner le sujet de l’arrière-plan, comme je l’ai fait sur les photos d’illustration de cet article),
- modifier la distance entre le sujet et l’arrière-plan, et voir ainsi l’effet obtenu,
- ou encore tester différents objectifs si tu en as plusieurs.
Ainsi, tu auras une bonne idée de ce que tu peux obtenir avec ton matériel et choisir ensuite les réglages en conséquence.
